Description

Description

An ancient Egyptian cosmetic vessel carved in the form of a seated monkey embracing a kohl container. Finely modeled with expressive facial features, detailed hands, and incised decoration, the opening at the top was designed to hold kohl, the dark eye cosmetic widely used in ancient Egypt.

Monkeys were a popular motif on cosmetic vessels during the New Kingdom. Kept as exotic companions and depicted in scenes of daily life, they became a distinctive decorative element on luxury toiletry objects. This piece beautifully combines ancient Egyptian craftsmanship with an intimate aspect of everyday life.
