Description

Description

These authentic Roman iron crucifixion nails date to the 1st century AD, the period of Roman rule in Judea and the time traditionally associated with the crucifixion of Jesus. Forged from iron and measuring approximately 22 cm (8.66 inches) in length, nails of this type were used by Roman soldiers during executions carried out under Roman authority throughout the province.

Large iron spikes like these were driven through the wrists or feet of the condemned and secured to wooden crosses during the Roman practice of crucifixion. The square shank and wide hammered head allowed the nail to hold firmly in wood, ensuring the body remained fixed in place.

Examples of crucifixion nails have been discovered in archaeological contexts across the Roman world, including the famous 1st-century crucified remains found at Giv'at HaMivtar in Jerusalem, which provided direct archaeological evidence of this Roman execution method.

Discovered in the region of Jerusalem, these nails represent a powerful relic from the Roman occupation of the Holy Land nearly 2,000 years ago.

Biblical Significance

Crucifixion nails like these are closely connected to the historical setting described in the New Testament, when Roman authorities governed Judea. According to the Gospels, Jesus of Nazareth was crucified under the Roman prefect Pontius Pilate, making artifacts of this type deeply tied to the events of the Biblical era and the Roman presence in Jerusalem.
