Description

Description

This Elamite bronze sword features a long triangular blade strengthened by a pronounced central midrib and subtle grooves running along its length, designed to provide both balance and structural integrity.

The blade rises from a rectangular forte with rounded flanges and transitions into a distinctive round-section hilt. The hilt is composed of a broad flaring discoid pommel, a short bar grip, and a smaller forward disc above, a form characteristic of Elamite weaponry.

The surface retains a rich ancient patina with natural oxidation and mineral deposits consistent with long-term burial. Swords of this type were not only functional weapons but also powerful symbols of rank and authority, likely carried by elite warriors within Elamite society.

Period and Time

Period and Time

Circa 1200–900 BC

Middle to Neo-Elamite Period

This sword belongs to the transitional era between the height of Elamite power in the Late Bronze Age and the early stages of the Iron Age in southwestern Iran. The Middle Elamite period was marked by strong centralized rule, monumental construction, and advanced bronze metallurgy. By the Neo-Elamite phase, regional dynamics were shifting, with Assyria rising in Mesopotamia while Elam remained a significant cultural and military force. Weapons from this period reflect both elite status and the martial traditions of the ancient Iranian plateau, predating the later Achaemenid Persian Empire by several centuries.

Material

Material

Cast and hammered bronze

The sword is crafted from bronze, an alloy primarily composed of copper with tin, widely used in the Late Bronze and Early Iron Age Near East. Bronze allowed for durable yet workable weapon forms, capable of being cast in molds and then refined through hammering and sharpening. The surface exhibits natural mineral encrustations and an aged patina formed over millennia of burial, consistent with ancient bronze artifacts from the Elamite cultural sphere.
